Safe Journalism pursues justice through a four-pillar strategy: advocacy, parallel investigations, coalition building, and victim liaison.
We unite legal experts, journalist unions, human rights organizations, and international NGOs to raise awareness and build pressure for accountability. Together with our partners, we provide training for investigators and at-risk journalists, and refine strategies to challenge impunity.
We work with federal and provincial lawmakers, investigators, and oversight bodies to formalize collaboration with our team and our Roster of Experts. Our aim is to strengthen investigative procedures and push for legal reforms that make effective prosecution possible, thus creating a legal and institutional environment where justice is possible.
Our team conducts independent investigations into journalist murders, especially in cases where the journalist was targeted for their work. Through on-ground fact-finding and expert review, we identify investigative gaps, expose misconduct, and flag errors for the authorities. This allows us to uncover patterns in attacks, track investigative failures, and recommend targeted interventions.
Through our partners, we support families of murdered journalists with legal guidance and assistance, helping them pursue justice with dignity and support.
